Seljalandsfoss is a breathtaking waterfall located on Iceland’s South Coast, just a few kilometers from Harmony Lodges, you can actually see it from your lodge. Known for its unique feature, a path that allows visitors to walk behind the waterfall, it has become a popular spot for photographers and nature lovers alike.
As one of Iceland’s most picturesque natural wonders, Seljalandsfoss can be crowded, so being just 5 km from it is perfect to avoid the busy hours. Seljalandsfoss is an unmissable highlight on your Iceland itinerary.
Seljalandsfoss waterfall, fed by the Seljalandsa river, has its source beneath the Eyjafjallajokull glacier. This glacier gained worldwide attention when the volcano beneath it erupted in 2010, disrupting air travel across Europe. While the waterfall itself has a narrow stream of water, it plunges from a tall cliff that once defined Iceland’s coastline centuries ago. Today, the sea lies further away, across a wide stretch of lowlands, but it remains visible from the waterfall’s location.
Floodlights were installed on both sides of Seljalandsfoss in 2001 to enhance the waterfall’s nighttime beauty, especially when the midnight sun is not present. These lights dramatically illuminate the falls, making for a stunning sight after dark, as the waterfall’s growing popularity as a tourist destination warranted such an addition.
Many visitors choose to continue their journey northward to discover Gljufrabui, a hidden waterfall partially tucked behind a rock face. Often overshadowed by the more famous Seljalandsfoss, Gljufrabui is considered a hidden gem, offering a more tranquil and lesser-known experience.
