Skógafoss is one of Iceland’s largest and most graceful waterfalls, offering a stunning sight as you journey through South Iceland.
With a width of 25 meters and a drop of 60 meters, Skógafoss creates a powerful cascade. The sheer size of the waterfall generates a mist that often forms a single or double rainbow on sunny days.
If the waterfall looks familiar, it might not just be a coincidence! Skógafoss has been a popular filming location, featuring in scenes from Thor: The Dark World, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and several other films.
Skógafoss is located on the Skógá River in South Iceland. The cliff from which the waterfall cascades once marked the coastline, though the sea has now retreated about 5 km, shifting the coastline further out.
The former sea cliffs now stretch parallel to the coast for many kilometers, forming a natural boundary between the coastal lowlands and Iceland’s highland regions.
Skógafoss is set in a stunning landscape, with a trail on its eastern side leading to the renowned Fimmvörðuháls pass.
You don’t have to walk far along the path from Skógafoss to be treated to breathtaking views. Along the trail, you’ll encounter dozens of other waterfalls, all fed by the same river that powers Skógafoss itself, adding to the area’s natural beauty.
